Senior Research And Development Engineer

Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany Full Time MedTech

About the job

Our client is an established medical device manufacturer specialising in the development and production of cardiovascular catheter technologies used in highly sensitive cardiac procedures. As they continue to strengthen their product development team, they are seeking an experienced Senior Catheter Development Engineer to support the development and optimisation of innovative catheter-based medical devices.

The position is based in Rheinfelden, Germany, and offers the opportunity to work across the complete product development lifecycle within an organisation where R&D, manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs work closely together.

The role

As a Senior Catheter Development Engineer, you will take a hands-on role in the development of cardiological catheter systems, supporting products from early-stage concepts and prototyping through design verification, industrialisation, and ongoing product improvements.

You will work closely with colleagues across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs, using your technical expertise to solve complex development challenges and ensure products meet the required performance, quality, and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and optimise cardiological catheter systems and associated technologies.
  • Take technical ownership of development activities from initial concepts through prototyping, verification, validation, and transfer into production.
  • Design and evaluate catheter components, assemblies, materials, and manufacturing concepts.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute development projects within a regulated medical device environment.
  • Develop prototypes and support technical feasibility studies and design iterations.
  • Define and coordinate testing, verification, and technical documentation for new and existing products.
  • Investigate technical challenges and implement appropriate design and process improvements.
  • Support the development and optimisation of manufacturing processes for catheter-based products.
  • Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, and other Engineering functions throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes, technologies, and existing catheter products.
  • Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to other engineers within the development team.

Required experience and qualifications

  • Several years of experience in medical device product development, ideally involving catheters, cardiovascular devices, minimally invasive devices, or similar disposable medical technologies.
  • Hands-on experience developing complex medical device products from concept through verification, validation, and production.
  • Strong understanding of product development within a regulated medical device environment.
  • Experience with catheter technologies, components, materials, manufacturing processes, or testing would be highly advantageous.
  • Degree in Medical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or another relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience planning and managing technical development activities or work packages.
  • Strong analytical and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs.
  • Structured and independent working style with the ability to take ownership of technical projects.
  • Good German and English communication skills.
