Software Engineer

Boston, United States

Our client is a Boston-based MedTech startup developing a non-invasive continuous monitor for a key biological marker. Powered by proprietary optical sensing technology, their device identifies the chemical composition of tissue without breaking the skin, eliminating the pain and effort from traditional long-term health monitoring. They have filed 50+ patents, work in close collaboration with universities and research institutes, and are advancing toward clinical studies.

The role

In this position, you will join the company as its first dedicated software hire, working directly with the founder and hardware team to build the mobile application layer from the ground up. You will own the full journey from device interface to cloud backend to user-facing app, with a mandate to deliver a consumer experience at the level of leading CGM apps or Whoop. This is a foundational role where you will establish the software function, set development practices, and help shape the technical direction of the company as it scales toward clinical and commercial milestones.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and own the company's mobile application (iOS and/or Android) from the ground up, setting the standard for quality, reliability, and user experience.
  • Design data pipelines from device to cloud, covering sensor data, and user data.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware engineers on BLE and wireless communication protocols between the device and application.
  • Ensure software architecture is compatible with SaMD regulatory pathways, including FDA and MDR, where applicable.
  • Establish software development practices and contribute to technical hiring as the team grows.

Required experience and qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of software engineering experience, with a strong and demonstrable mobile portfolio.
  • Proven ability to build polished, reliable consumer health or wearable applications.
  • Hands-on experience with BLE communication, sensor data handling, and real-time data visualisation.
  • Comfort working across the full stack, from device interface through to cloud backend and user-facing application.
  • SaMD experience is a meaningful plus; familiarity with IEC 62304 or FDA software guidance is welcome.
  • Start-up experience preferred; you should be comfortable being the first into a function and building from scratch.
  • Fluency in English.

Why this role?

  • Join a small, mission-driven team working on genuinely novel non-invasive sensing technology with the potential to transform long-term health monitoring.
  • Work directly with the founder, with real influence over technical direction and product architecture from day one.
  • Competitive compensation, with significant growth opportunity as the company advances through clinical studies and toward commercialisation.
  • Be part of a company where your work has a direct and tangible impact on patient quality of life.
