Senior Mechanical Engineer

Passau, Germany Full Time MedTech

Our client is an established medical technology company developing advanced medical imaging and diagnostic hardware used by healthcare professionals internationally. As they continue to expand their Hardware R&D team, they are seeking an experienced Senior Product Development Engineer – Mechanical with strong expertise across CAD construction, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), injection-moulded plastics, CNC-machined components, and the industrialisation of complex physical products.

The role

As a Senior Product Development Engineer for Mechanical, you will take ownership of mechanical product development from initial concepts and industrial design through detailed engineering, tooling, industrialisation, and serial production.

A major focus of the position is taking ambitious industrial-design concepts and translating them into robust, manufacturable mechanical constructions. You will need to think beyond CAD modelling and understand how parts will actually be manufactured, assembled, toleranced and produced reliably at scale.

You will design sophisticated assemblies incorporating injection-moulded housings, internal structures, precision CNC-machined components and electromechanical interfaces, working closely with Industrial Design, Electronics, Optics, Manufacturing and external suppliers.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical development of complex physical products from concept through industrialisation and serial production.
  • Translate industrial design concepts and complex geometries into robust, functional and manufacturable mechanical constructions.
  • Develop detailed mechanical designs and complex assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Design injection-moulded plastic components, including housings, internal structures and cosmetic parts.
  • Design precision CNC-machined components with appropriate materials, tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles throughout product development.
  • Define part architecture, materials, joining methods, tolerance strategies and assembly concepts.
  • Perform tolerance analysis and dimensional control across complex assemblies.
  • Work closely with Industrial Design to balance ambitious product aesthetics with practical engineering and manufacturing requirements.
  • Collaborate across Electronics, Optics, Firmware, Software, Quality and Manufacturing throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Develop prototypes, evaluate competing concepts and validate critical design assumptions.
  • Produce complete engineering documentation including CAD models, production drawings, tolerance specifications, BOMs and assembly instructions.
  • Lead mechanical design reviews and technical discussions.
  • Collaborate directly with international suppliers, contract manufacturers, machine shops and toolmakers.
  • Support tooling development, sampling, manufacturing ramp-up and product industrialisation.
  • Review moulded and machined components, investigate production issues and implement sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Improve existing products across functionality, usability, quality, manufacturability and cost.

Required experience and qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Development, Mechatronics, or a comparable technical discipline.
  • Several years of professional experience developing complex physical products, ideally including responsibility from detailed design through production.
  • Advanced CAD construction and SolidWorks experience, with the ability to turn complex product design concepts into production-ready mechanical designs.
  • Strong hands-on experience designing injection-moulded plastic components.
  • Strong understanding of injection-moulded design principles, including draft, ribs, bosses, wall thickness, snaps and cosmetic surfaces.
  • Experience designing precision CNC-machined components, including materials, tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Strong practical knowledge of DFM and DFA.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis, dimensional control, joining methods and assembly architecture.
  • Experience taking physical products through tooling, industrialisation and serial production.
  • Experience collaborating directly with suppliers, toolmakers, machine shops and/or contract manufacturers.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and the ability to design beyond the CAD environment.
  • Hands-on, practical problem-solving skills and the ability to take substantial technical ownership.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working within interdisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Good written and spoken German and English.

Particularly relevant experience

Experience developing products within any of the following environments would be particularly relevant:

  • Medical devices and medical imaging systems
  • Cameras and imaging hardware
  • Optical instruments
  • Consumer electronics
  • Premium physical products
  • Laboratory and scientific equipment
  • Electromechanical products
  • Products combining injection-moulded plastics with precision-machined components

Experience within medical devices or another regulated industry is beneficial but not a strict requirement. Candidates with excellent mechanical product development experience from other sophisticated hardware industries are strongly encouraged to apply.
