The role
In this position, you will join in a senior leadership role, responsible for driving the development and miniaturisation of a highly complex medical device. You will lead a small, highly skilled team while also taking ownership of identifying and integrating the most advanced external technologies available globally. This is a non-linear, innovation-driven role offering significant autonomy, combining deep technical expertise in optical physics with strategic leadership and external collaboration.
Key responsibilities
• Lead, mentor, and provide technical direction to a team of optical physicists and engineers
• Define and execute the strategy and roadmap for technology miniaturisation, including key milestones and deliverables
• Scout and evaluate cutting-edge technologies globally to identify optimal solutions for device development
• Build and manage strategic partnerships with external developers, suppliers, research institutions, and consultants
• Lead the selection and evaluation of external partners to accelerate development and reduce project risk
• Drive the project from early-stage concept through to a validated, development-ready solution
• Manage internal and external development budgets effectively
• Report progress, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership, including executive stakeholders and board-level audiences
• Collaborate cross-functionally to align technical development with broader business objectives
Required experience and qualifications
• Strong academic background in Optical Physics or a closely related field
• Proven experience leading early-stage, non-linear R&D or concept-phase development projects
• Experience in technology scouting and working with external partners on a global scale
• Strong leadership capabilities, with experience managing small, high-performing technical teams
• Ability to operate with autonomy, taking ownership of strategy and execution in ambiguous environments
• Proactive, pragmatic, and solutions-oriented mindset
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical teams and senior stakeholders
